Illustration Latest Additions: Folio Illustration and Animation Agency

Check out this great new international group of illustrators and animators new to the Workbook for the first time.

Above: Bodil Jane is an internationally known Dutch illustrator famed for her quirky and character-driven style as much as for her feminist themes. Her work incorporates both hand-drawing and advanced digital work.
On a commercial level, Bodil likes to say she can illustrate everything. That seems to be the case, judging by her history illustrating everything from food, recipes, animals, fashion, interiors and plants to product packages and maps.

Award winning fashion illustrator Jason Brooks specialises in collaborations with aspirational and luxury brands. He is very versatile, working in everything from glossy digital images to hand rendered pen and ink artwork and live drawing events. His famous illustrations encompass fashion, beauty, architecture and travel. Jason wrote and illustrated the award winning City Sketchbook series, including the London, Paris and New York Sketchbooks published by Laurence King, and London’s V&A Museum holds over 70 of his fashion illustrations and prints in its permanent collection. Jason’s commercial experience is extensive, and includes successful large scale advertising campaigns, licensing, packaging design, animation, book publishing, editorial illustration, shop window design, renderings for the film industry and gallery exhibitions, and has worked with some of the most recognised names in fashion and beauty.
Owen Davey (He/Him) is an award-winning illustrator from the UK whose work has been featured in picture books, publications, apps, and advertising around the world. Working digitally, he creates nature-inspired pieces that capture a dreamy, whimsical quality that transports the viewer into worlds of wonder. Notable work by Owen includes: Mad about Monkeys, Crazy About Cats and Smart About Sharks by Flying Eye Books, and the environments for the app Two Dots. Owen specialises in helping you engage with your audience using strong textures, patterns and colour palettes to convey meaning in a friendly and accessible manner,
Mercedes deBellard is an illustrator from Madrid. Her work is well known, having a client list that includes Warner Brothers, Random House, and more. Few can capture the soul as well as the image of a celebrity the way that she can. Mercedes is one of our most popular portrait artists, showcasing a realistic yet delicately expressive style with an indefinably ethereal touch.
Michael Driver is a Nottingham born, London based illustrator. His work is a culmination of both digital and analogue techniques, where he captures great characters, and produces interesting textures. Michael has worked predominantly on editorial work, but has also worked on Advertising campaigns, and in publishing.
Amelia Flower is a UK illustrator, based in London. Amelia’s friendly illustrations and charming characters are perfect for many subjects including children’s publishing, lifestyle and portrait illustrations. She is inspired by observing people and social situations which translates into beautifully illustrated scenarios with real people.
FolioLab Animation
Maïté Franchi can convey so very much with just a few lines and colours. She is inspired by the Deco forms and textures of her Paris home, but considers herself a student of every genre and illustrative style. Maïté has extensive experience as an art director as well as an illustrator and graphic designer, bringing a unique skillset to bear for her clients.
Peter Greenwood’s seemingly effortless use of negative space and perspective lets him approach a vast array of subjects from differing viewpoints. He naturally gravitates to music and transportation themes, but is in no way limited to them. Peter has worked with many high profile clients, producing everything from minimalist iconography to extensive, detailed cityscapes and powerful animation.
Carolyn Jenkins combines two disparate career paths, illustration and professional gardening. Well respected in both, she has won two RHS medals for her botanical paintings at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Botanical Art Show; a Gold and ‘Best Exhibit’ in 2011 and a Silver in 2016. The RHS Lindley Library have purchased two of her paintings for its collection; Helleborus x hybridus and Dahlia ‘Arabian Night’. In America, the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation also holds one of her paintings in its collection.
Donghyun Lim is a Seoul based illustrator. Through his use soft, clean colour palettes, textures and retro-style characters, Donghyun’s portfolio works across a range of applications – from fashion, editorial, animation and advertising. This is evident in his extensive client list, such as Apple, New Balance and Washington Post.
Sarah Maxwell is an American illustrator based in London. She was born and raised in Austin, Texas, only to then travel to Paris for studies. Having lived there for over 5 years, she has made the move to travel across the pond to the UK to start a new chapter of her life. Her work ranges from fashion illustration to animated GIFs and comics. The best way to describe her work is summed up in 4 key words: nostalgia, tenderness, femininity, and 80’s electronic music.
Nabil Nezzar’s career began in France, and has spanned Australia, New Zealand and most recently Belgium. His client list is just as varied and international as his history and artistic range. Nabil has worked in many fields over the years, including fashion, products and portraits in watercolour, pencil and gouache for some of the world’s most recognizable brands.
Rui Ricardo is an unusually versatile illustrator whose work reflects the influences of Manga, vintage travel posters and classic science fiction. The way he combines detailed realism with cartoonish elements is truly captivating. Rui specializes in highly polished, detailed illustrations with a vintage twist, gaining an enthusiastic following that crosses national boundaries.
Kouzou Sakai began in academia, graduating in Animal Science and Biotechnology. His affinity for nature is unquestionable in his portrayal of people, plants and animals in a wide variety of sometimes fantastic environments. Kouzou creates everything from mysterious, surreal worlds to clear and conceptual information graphics for clients in the editorial, publishing and advertising fields.
Stephan Schmitz studied Illustration at Lucerne School of Art and Design and Art Education at ZĂŒrich University of the Arts. After graduating in 2009, he started working as a Freelance Illustrator for newspapers, magazines and advertising. In his illustrations he tells short and self-contained stories and loves to surprise the observer with visual gimmicks. Since 2015 his work has earned him several awards and recognitions including Creative Quarterly's 100 Best 2015, American Illustration, 3x3 Annual of Contemporary Illustration, Society of Illustrators 58 and just recently LĂŒrzers Archive 200 Best Illustrators worldwide 16/17. Karolis Strautniekas is a conceptual illustrator and creative, with extremely wide-ranging talents. No matter what his medium, his work is deeply unique and personal, displaying his imagination and incredible eye for design. Karolis is just as adept with line & colour portraits and tactile, print-influenced pieces as he is with children’s work and engaging graphics and icons.
Swindler & Swindler are a husband and wife team who bring a unique aesthetic to their work. Mr Swindler is credited with the rigor, precision and control of their work, while Mrs Swindler is said to provide the sense of poetry and movement. The Swindlers together create amazing complementary worlds, providing traditional hand drawings and illustrations for clients in a wide range of industries.
Olivia Waller is an Illustrator and Printmaker, based in Brighton. She combines elements of collage, drawing and printmaking within her work to depict scenes of striking characters and celebrations of women. With her background in printmaking, her textures and techniques make her style unique, but still commercial for editorial, branding and advertising clients.
Alexander Wells is a UK illustrator based in Brighton with a bold, dynamic drawing style and a keen eye for portrait illustrations. He is inspired by science fiction, computer games and pop culture and this translates into vibrant, fun and dramatic illustrations. Alexander is popular for his well-observed portrait illustrations, energetic sports illustrations and eye-catching editorial illustrations.
