Although husband-and-wife illustrators Donna Grethen and Paul Tong share both a studio and a profession, that’s where the similarities end. Their distinct styles create a playful back-and-forth when approaching the same topics.
When asked about each other’s work, Paul describes Donna’s as multifaceted, featuring bold color, delicate, whimsical lines, and complex compositions that offer creative solutions for a wide range of projects. Donna, in turn, characterizes Paul’s work as inspired by his childhood love of classic monster movies, marked by descriptive, comic book-style linework, strong conceptual thinking, and a unique perspective.
Whether they’re working on book covers, editorial illustrations, conceptual pieces, or political Op-Eds, this duo brings imagination in tandem while offering beautifully distinct visions to every project they take on.
