Andy Anderson: Life Around Horses

Posted on

Photographer Andy Anderson was a perfect fit as the still photographer on this commercial shoot for animal pharmaceutical company, Zoetis. Having grown up on a horse ranch and later watching his daughter compete at barrel racing, he has spent his life around horses.  And he knows what makes them special: from the texture of their hair, to their emotive eyes, and their distinct personalities. He also developed the ability to read equine body language, including the ability to anticipate their next moves, and on this particular project, it served him well. While this shoot was clearly in Andy’s wheelhouse, there was the added challenge of shooting alongside a 100-person film crew. As Andy says, “When you are a single still photographer against a 100-person film crew, you need to anticipate what will come next.”

When asked what he hoped people would learn about him from this latest series Andy told us, “…that I am versatile in almost any situation. Throughout my career, I have had to change plans at a moment’s notice due to a variety of factors. This shoot tested my versatility and I think, in the end, the images turned out great. We weren’t able to have any strobes, as to not startle the horses, which I think allowed for more raw and dynamic photos. I see any challenge as an opportunity to create something fresh, and I think that was done here.”
