For the freelancer, an assignment can often feel like a fire drill. Case in point: an email that painter/illustrator Christopher Peterson recently received asking he if would be able to create a poster in fewer than 24 hours. Naturally, he said, “Of course.” Chris has created more then 80 posters for a variety of venues and bands: Paul McCartney, Phish, The String Cheese Incident, Sting, Eric Clapton, Robert Earl Keene, Elvis Costello, John Hiatt, Taj Mahal, Peter Frampton, Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed, Gloria Estefan, Wilco, Willie Nelson, and more. This one was for John Legend.
Christopher worked with the art director reviewing some of John Legend’s existing imagery, which is distinctively romantic, and decided on the simple image of a rose. This gave him the opportunity to create an original oil painting to which he added hand-lettering. After some intense work, Christopher was able to book the file and sent it off to the printer. It was framed and in John Legend’s dressing room in time for the show.
