Dana Goldstein’s Drag Portrait Project

Posted on

Hudson Valley-based portrait photographer Dana Goldstein took advantage of the slower pace of 2020 to begin shooting a personal project that was in the planning stage prior to the pandemic. Her Drag Portrait Project showcases Drag performers in the style of 1930’s Hollywood imagery. Due to the fact that live events were cancelled around the world, the drag artists she hoped to work with were — unusually — available for portrait sittings during the fall. Having now worked with iconic performers like Lady Bunny and Drag Race stars such as Darienne Lake, she has commitments from drag artists around the country and plans to continue shooting the project, which she intends to publish, through 2021. The book will include first-person narratives from each performer as well as thought-provoking essays on drag performance.
