Darren Carroll Reflects on 11 Years as a U.S. Open Official Photographer

Posted by Workbook on

2026 marks Photographer Darren Carroll’s 11th U.S. Open working as a member of the official photography team. Prior to that, Darren had covered the event editorially for Sports Illustrated for a number of years. Working for the US Open itself involves far more considerations than the generally reactive elements of an editorial assignment; in addition to action, behind-the-scenes, and full match coverage for the event website, the team is responsible for social media content for both the tournament and all players, as well as marketing, promotional, advertising and internal imagery. With all that responsibility, Darren is constantly on the lookout not just for peak action but for branding and sense-of-place images, in addition to using his team’s unique access to show fans something they wouldn’t ordinarily see.
