Darryl Estrine is deeply involved in every project he undertakes and often acts as DP and photographer, depending on the scope of the job. He begins by building a mood board with the use of Pinterest that enables him to flesh out ideas on wardrobe, location, and props. In addition, he works on developing the concept and writing the script. Darryl loves his crew, which is typically comprised of two or three assistants, a hair and makeup artist, stylist, and producer. And he relies on their input, especially for the motion phase of a project, when every extra pair of eyes can help make or break a project.
The only thing he doesn’t do, it seems, is edit. “It’s like retouching, not a skill I wanted to hone after seeing what people who do it all day can do. These are great artists and my relationship with my editor (and retoucher) is a very close one. We spend eight hours a day sitting next to each other so there’s a lot of mutual respect.”
Voices of Impulse is one of his latest film-based projects. It was shot over three days, months apart. He also just finished two videos for a local college, TV commercials for a pest control company, and a construction developer, all the while working on a number of personal projects that include stills and film, which will add to his already extensive reel and portfolio.
