Illustrator Gail Armstrong was commissioned by Latitude Agency Pte Ltd. to create all-white paper sculpture illustrations for the Raffles Hotel Singapore, re-imagining the packaging for their mooncakes.
Gail came up with the idea of using ‘moon blooms’ – flowers notable for their nighttime significance. She created one main illustration for the outer box which included a Moon Moth that symbolizes good luck. Illustrations of four individual blooms were then created for the four inner boxes which housed the mooncakes: lotus flowers to represent the lotus seed paste from which Moon Cakes are made, Wisteria for its heavy night scent, Moonflowers from bud to full bloom to represent the phases of the moon, and Cereus (Queen of the Night) which blooms only once, at night, and brings good fortune to anyone who sees it.
Although the design was ultimately unused, the stunning work is a true celebration of the Lunar New Year.
