Bill Mayer is one of the most versatile illustrators out there. When Art director SooJin Buzelli contacted him recently and requested his “air brush style,” she also told him she was “open to anything,” meaning one of roughly five different styles. The brief was for Plan Advisor and was titled “Opportunity in small things, or big universe within a smaller world.”
If sketching is thinking, then judging from the sketches below you can begin to grasp how Bill Mayer thinks as he hones in on the right visual. In the end he produced 68 different sketches for ideas and does admit he was a bit all over the place. But once the final sketch was selected, Bill went to work on the finish.
