As early as Kindergarten Jeff Slemons remembers being interested in drawing and painting. Anytime the easel was available during activity time he made an immediate bee line to it’s vicinity. By the first grade he was creating illustrated stories on his Big Chief note paper and stapling the pages together to give out to various friends. He still has some of them; they’re so bad they’re good. By the 6th grade he decided he was going to be a full-time illustrator. Getting paid to draw stuff seemed like a decent way to make a living. He would find out if this was true or not upon graduating from the Colorado Institute of Art in the fall of 1986.
Since that time he has worked on a variety of assignments from the editorial world to the commercial and corporate realm. These projects range from pen and ink work with comic books to fully painted illustrations for magazines, trading cards, childrens books, and fun stuff like that. He enjoy working with pen & ink, pastels, gouache and oil paint. These days he is at the easel painting as much as I am at the drawing table penciling and inking.
Although the days of getting a call for a job and sitting down with the art director to discuss it is pretty much gone he still get a thrill out of getting an email query regarding potential work. He misses the face to face interaction, but he still enjoys being able to meet the client’s needs and deliver a competent piece that will please them and do the job it
needs to. Turns out he was right; getting paid to draw stuff is a pretty fun way to make a living. If you have a project in mind reach out to him and see what you can bring to life.
