For Jody Horton, the best part of working on BBQ pit master Big Moe Cason’s first cookbook was getting to know Big Moe himself – a truly bigger-than-life character as well as a local celebrity in his home town of Des Moines, Iowa. Jody spent five days there getting to know Moe, his family and friends and witnessed his interaction with fans who recognize him on the street. A few weeks later, Moe joined Jody in Austin for the cover and recipe shoot, and then met up again in Memphis where Moe and his competition BBQ team were cooking at the Memphis in May International Festival where Jody says he witnessed them, “…take home a much-deserved trophy for the best pork shoulder I have ever eaten – hands down.” It was a great way to wrap up the production.
