Photographer Joshua Steadman took a detour recently on his way from a job site to tour Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia in the aftermath of the protests that took place there. The images here are what he saw as he walked through the Monument Avenue Historic District on his way to the 60-foot tall monument to Confederate General, Robert E. Lee.
Monument Ave in Richmond was once the home of a number of monuments to the Confederacy, but recently their numbers have dwindled to just this one. It now presides as a focal point of the debate over why we continue to honor any symbols of the Confederacy. As these pictures show, the local population has weighed in on the issue.
