Kyle Stansbury Captures the Bond Between Human and Bird

Posted on

The Montana Peregrine Institute, led by environmental activist and biologist Jay Sumner, is a conservation organization based in Arlee, Montana. Sumner played a key role in the recovery of peregrine falcons nearly 40 years ago when the species faced near extinction due to DDT use. His efforts brought him national recognition, and at 86, he continues to work with his birds daily, embracing the demanding lifestyle of a falconer.

For photographer Kyle Stansbury, documenting Sumner’s work was a dream come true. Kyle, who has long admired the art of falconry and the deep bond it creates between humans and birds, spent several days capturing this unique relationship. He was struck by Sumner’s passion and the seamless teamwork between Sumner, his bird dog Zoom, and his two falcons, Eden and Katy, who work in perfect harmony during their daily hunts.

The experience of photographing such a powerful collaboration left a lasting impression on him. He was especially moved by the opportunity to be so close to the falcons, their screeches echoing just an arm’s length away. As a photographer, it was an unforgettable moment, one that deepened his respect for falconry and the dedication of individuals like Jay Sumner who continue to preserve and celebrate this ancient tradition.
