Looking Back to The Best of 2019: Photographers and Directors

Posted on

Adding new work to a portfolio is vital for a sustained and successful career in photography. Creative buyers love looking at personal projects, and so do we. It’s a window into what it might look like to collaborate with a photographer and the the kind of creative eye one is capable of bringing to a project.

“This is one of several images from a personal project of mine entitled ‘Lake Life.’ No shot list, no branding, no storyboards…’Lake Life’ is a personal project that allows me to unplug and react to the beauty of life on the lake. It’s my favorite of 2019 because the freedom I feel while making these images recharges my soul and readys me to jump back into the world of shot lists, branding, and storyboards.” Richmond Gibbs

Botanical Crypt - Personal Project on Carnivorous Plants "While shooting this personal project and studying carnivorous plants, I learned as artists, we need to adapt and evolve constantly along with our ever-changing industry. Survival of the fittest applies both in the wild and in any kind of business/industry, but do not be afraid to experiment, fail, play, and most importantly, have fun with work! This miniseries was shot on location at a thriving greenhouse 200 miles north of Los Angeles." Vijey
"I created a story (film and stills) about a blind ex-stunt horse, Diablo, and his relationship with owner and stunt rider Dylan. It shows the bond between them as they worked in the stunt-horse industry on films and TV such as Warhorse, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, and Merlin. Dylan has seen Diablo go from a healthy horse to fully blind, but Diablo still has the fire in his belly to perform. I loved this project because it pushed me and my filming and shooting still; at the same time while under pressure, to see a 20-year bond between an animal and a human and the relationship with and trust Diablo has in Dylan to be his eyes when riding." Dan Prince
"Working with Darren Petrucci and Joe Pritchard from A-I-R Architects, the idea was to showcase a modern desert home, with a nod to the style of mid century Eichler homes. The figure at the door represents a futuristic being, fully embracing the technology built into the home." Jeff Zaruba
"The image of the boxer is from a personal project I’ve been doing for about a year and half, documenting a gym on the West Side of Chicago called the Austin Boxing Club. I love getting involved in the community in the gym and getting to know the boxers as they work toward the Chicago Golden Gloves competition." Doug McGoldrick
Client: USA Network / Project: “Treadstone" TV Show Print Campaign "This is on of my favorites because I worked catacombs and jumped from buildings to replicate the world of Jason Bourne. We shot knife fights and martial arts in an action-packed shoot focused on creating iconic imagery. I recently saw this shoot on almost every subway stop in New York, which was great!" Jason Elias
"I worked on a personal project of pairing wine and food. I paired Merlot with roasted heirloom tomatoes and the colors and flavors just pop." Judy Doherty
"My favorite project of 2019 must be this ad for BPme rewards from Digitas. The scale of the production was massive, but I was able to creatively play within the space and found a way to work the way I like; the images turned out great too, can't beat that." Nathaniel Smith
"This was a really cool project we did we did in Atlanta with the Atlanta Police Department, incredible people who do a very difficult job." Pat Molnar
Navigate Life Texas
"We spent a lovely day in the park with seven exceptional families - families of children with disabilities and special healthcare needs. By telling their stories on the Navigate Life Texas website, they help build a community of caring and sharing, with links to services and real stories written by the families themselves. My crew and I are grateful to the Austin branding and digital agency, Mighty Citizen, for asking us to help tell these stories. We gained a new appreciation for the power of families to face the challenges of raising children with disabilities. We were deeply touched by the experience. "My favorite project of 2019 must be a personal project I put together while on a commercial assignment on Oahu, called Keawa'ula. It turned into a study in letting go, as the weather didn’t work out as planned. I captured friends sharing their best day ever at secluded pathways and in hidden discoveries, all while enjoying the memorable company of each other. It’s a story of authentic and organic moments, deepening relationships between people and with the world around them." Scott Lowden
