Marc Kallweit Photographs Zach Hill of Death Grips for His Faces In Sacramento Music Project

Photographer Marc Kallweit captured a rare and electrifying moment with Zach Hill of Death Grips as part of his personal project Faces In Sacramento Music. Shot in a basement in Midtown Sacramento, Hill’s explosive drumming style took center stage.  Kallweit recalls, “Zach is the most intense drummer I have ever watched in my life.” The energy from the session was palpable in Kallweit’s images, with one even being published in The New York Times.

This photo shoot predated the band’s infamous cancellation of a NIN tour just days before it was to kick off. It remains the most cited example of the band’s unpredictable and often self-sabotaging ‘art-first’ philosophy, which involved a total disregard for professional standards—even when a legend like Trent Reznor is involved.
