Mark Summers Creates Scratchboard Portraits of Silent Film Stars

Posted on

Illustrator Mark Summers has unveiled an ongoing personal project using his signature scratchboard technique to celebrate the icons of early cinema.

Created entirely by hand, Mark originally began this series as a labor of love, with the ultimate goal of publishing it as a book. While recognizable legends are included, his primary focus is on the forgotten stars who achieved world fame during the silent era before vanishing from public memory—“there are literally hundreds of them,” Mark notes. It’s a striking homage to a bygone era, pairing a lost age of filmmaking with an unsung visual medium rooted in pure dedication to craft.
