Photographer Director Michael Clark is one of the most sought after adventure-sports photographers with a career spanning over 30 years. So it was certainly a tall order to ask what the top 10 images of his career thus far would be. Michael has photographed just about every outdoor sport you can imagine—and probably some you can’t. He whittled down his list using the criteria of images that stop you in your tracks. After all, his job is to create images that do just that: images that will stop you when flipping through a book or magazine so that you take it all in, and actually see the advertisement or article.
Known for his use of artificial lighting in the outdoors, Michael also added a number of images that show off that skillset. “I love creating an image that you cannot see with the naked eye because we added light to a scene to highlight the athlete and their abilities. Using powerful strobes outdoors with cutting edge technology is a big part of my work and creating images that are nearly impossible to pull off is what really gets me excited—I love pushing into unknown territory and working with a team to create something completely new in the photographic space. That very rarely happens in the photography industry—but I have been lucky enough to create several images where we were able to create an entirely new type of image that has never before existed.”
