Michael Piazza Photographs Boston’s Rising Chefs for Food & Wine

Posted on

Last summer, Food & Wine enlisted Photographer/Director Michael Piazza to shoot a series of restaurants in Boston for their Best New Chefs City Guide. After reviewing the options, the magazine settled on five standout spots — Oleana, Anchovies Bar, El Centro, Iru, and Winsor Dim Sum Cafe — and gave him considerable creative latitude. Beyond the initial brief, most of the logistics and scheduling were left in his hands as well.

The assignment proved to be a fascinating cross-section of Boston’s dining scene. Some restaurants, like Oleana, embraced the project immediately. Others required a bit more convincing — most notably the unapologetically old-school Winsor Dim Sum House, tucked into the heart of Chinatown, where the initial reception was, to put it mildly, skeptical. But persistence paid off. Once the team saw the shoot in action and understood the scope of the feature, they were all in — sending dish after dish out of the kitchen in rapid succession, barely giving him time to keep up.

And the hospitality didn’t stop there. On his way out, they sent him home with so much food that he was happily working through Chinese leftovers for the better part of a week.
