Illustrator Paul Garland recently created cover and feature illustrations to accompany the lead article of Bulletin Magazine published by The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. The article focuses on frailty and fragility due to age or illness and how it subsequently can affect speech.
Paul creates a delicate narrative with his artistry around the idea of frailty and echoes the idea of its transformative potential. Paul’s images evoke hope despite the gravity of the subject matter. The hands depicted in the images also give a sense of care that mirrors that of the Speech and Language therapists that work with patients who are on this journey. It’s a balance of hope and gravitas that Paul is able to convey with his signature style.
