Photographing the Photographer

Portrait of WIlliam Eggleston

It wouldn’t hurt to ask; the worst thing he could say is no. With that in mind and an extra day in Memphis, home of  American Photographer William Eggleston, Cade Martin was able to locate Mr. Eggleston and convince him to sit for this beautiful portrait. Like many photographers, Cade Martin considers Eggleston one of the greats. Like the true artist he is, William Eggleston successfully broke new ground and shattered old assumptions within the fine art world, and his work has been exhibited in major art institutions around the world. Cade describes him this way: “A true original in the field for nearly sixty years, Eggleston turned his lens and his attention to the commonplace, finding stark beauty in the banal, and forever changing the aesthetic of the American photographic landscape through color.” He used widely available materials, including Kodachrome film, which produced the beautiful, saturated color seen in the images below.
