Craig Butler was there from the beginning with an intuitive sense of what the Workbook could be. His very first cover design in 1978 featured some of the biggest creatives in Los Angeles at the time and is proof of his awareness that in advertising creativity is collaboration. In the following decades, Workbook not only galvanized the LA creative community, it inspired creative collaboration on a national and international scale. During that time, Craig never stopped working with artists on both sides of the creative equation to produce some of the covers you see here, as well as maintain his own design studio where he challenged his clients to think differently and to take creative chances.
But after nearly 23 years at the creative helm, Craig decided it was time to pursue his own artwork and retired to paint full-time. His other passion, which he took up in his forties, was skiing. Craig brought endless enthusiasm to these pursuits and everything else he did. But now, it’s farewell good friend; you will be missed.
