SAVERIO’s Latest Work with the University of Chicago and Chicago Magazine

Posted on

As both an AI enthusiast and supporter of human creativity, SAVERIO was over-the-moon to photograph the The University of Chicago team behind the software Glaze and Nightshade for Chicago Magazine. While these two free software solutions differ slightly, their purpose remains the same: to outmaneuver AI systems at their own game.

Glaze and sister software, Nightshade apply nearly imperceptible, pixel-level changes to artworks we post on the web. These changes effectively alter the style and “misrepresent” art making it difficult for AI art generators to understand and mimic them, thus protecting copyright holders from AI-generated plagiarism.

Chicago Magazine hired Saverio to photograph portraits of the U of C team in such a way that suggests the effects of the software, but without need for digital manipulation. As part of his solution, Saverio landed on glass filters he saw advertised on Instagram. Despite the lab’s office being bland as you can imagine, he used these new tools to introduce a sense of imbalance and disruption to otherwise straight portraits.
