Scott Van Osdol Shares His Secret to Getting the Perfect Shot in Cow Country

Posted on

Photographer/Director Scott Van Osdol knows better than to leave a great shot to chance. On his latest assignment with Legendary Akaushi Genetics, Scott leaned on a simple, time-tested truth: snacks get the shot.

Out in the pasture, it wasn’t just about chasing perfect light or waiting for a lucky moment. The real secret weapon came in the form of grain silage and molasses range cubes, irresistible treats that turned curious Akaushi heifers into eager collaborators. With pockets full of cubes and camera in hand, Scott settled into the grass. A nearby rancher offered a cautious warning: “You don’t know when these girls might bolt.” But Scott was undeterred. These sweet-tempered Akaushi cattle were more interested in snacks than stampedes, and before long, they were crowding in like seasoned models hitting their marks.

This marked Scott’s third shoot for Legendary Akaushi Genetics, spanning the striking landscapes of Broken Bow, Nebraska, and Viola, Wisconsin. Rolling hills blanketed in knee-high grass stretched in every direction, while soft, golden light poured across the fields, conditions that made any photographer feel right at home. The result was a reminder of his love for ranch and agriculture photography, and some new bovine buddies.
