“No matter how good AI gets, it is still working from what has already been created. The real work is still in noticing what is happening in front of you, reading the room, and building trust.”
In her latest Substack article, Photographer Sue Barr discusses the subject of AI and its uses. In defense of humans, Sue argues that AI has to build upon what photographers like herself have already sought out and created. She notes the human artistry necessary for such powerful images comes from lived experience that then fuels a unique point of view. “My process has always been about light, direction, and especially empathy,” Sue writes, adding, “My goal is to make images and content that feel human, beautifully seen, and real enough to linger.” Though time will tell if AI will catch up to that innate sensibility, for now it’s a directive that can only be human-accomplished.
