The Latest from the Salzman Group

As business conditions change we all adapt, and Richard Salzman knows this better than most. By the early 2000s, the rate and manner in which imagery was commissioned and consumed had changed radically, and like so many, Richard was forced to find ways to remain relevant.

He began his metamorphosis somewhat by accident. He had made a few contacts in Europe through in-person portfolio showings in the late 1990s, but the addition to his roster of  award-winning illustrator Mark Smith of the UK turned out to be a pivotal move that brought him to the attention of illustrators working in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. And at this point, what used to be referred to as “overnight delivery,”  had become as fast as one could email a file.

 As he began representing more illustrators from England, Italy, Russia, Israel, Canada, Lithuania, Norway, and South Africa, it occurred to Richard that the arrangement suited him well. While he was pleased that “….. a number of my artists are thriving and even succeeding in the U.S., some beyond our own expectations, I’m still comforted not to feel the personal burden that I am solely responsible for their sustenance living, which they should be able to generate in their home countries.”  And now Richard  says, “… the combination of representing so many European artists combined with the ability of the internet to allow us to send work anywhere instantly, 25 – 30 percent of my business is now from European clients; so in the end, I have truly become an international agency.”
