Steven Noble: Bringing Timeless Woodcut Artistry to Modern Brands

Posted on

Illustrator Steven Noble has been hard at work creating incredible pieces of art for various clients. From posters to packaging, Steven’s signature woodcut style has been sought after to help bring both nostalgia and evergreen artistry to every project.

Inspired by the nostalgic aesthetic of vintage National Park posters, Steven Noble was commissioned to create a custom, four-color illustration for “The Highlands” of Red River Gorge. The breathtaking canyon scene features towering cliffs on either side, with rock climbers scaling the sheer face on the right. To achieve a screen-printed, classic look, Steven rendered the artwork entirely by hand using a meticulous woodcut and etching style, beautifully finished with a subtle color wash.

Steven also created a series of custom illustrations for the beer labels of Bierfabriek, a hip, urban brewery in Amsterdam known for its craft ales, organic grilled dishes, and private tap tables. To match the brewery’s distinctive, contemporary edge, Steven developed a collection of gritty, stylized woodcut illustrations. These striking designs bring a completely unique visual identity to Bierfabriek’s signature pours, including Vals Alarm, Puur, Scafttijd, and Snipperdag.

Lastly, Stolen Spirits Branding commissioned Steven Noble to create iconographic illustrations for their packaging labels that included a series of icons such as a hare, candle and fox. Illustrations were rendered in a line woodcut style for use across all media applications, and were created in the tarot card design style.
