Rapp Art agent Jody Hein and 2Communique Creative Director Kelly McMurray share their insights about the business of illustration, and specifically the importance of assigning original illustration, in this hour long conversation. Although both are aware that budgets are often very tight, an original artwork created specifically for a story that appears across multiple channels is well worth the investment.
The two had a lot to say about the whole process from start to finish, but the key take-away is that when commissioning original artwork, allow the illustrator to do the conceptualizing. Be open to the non-literal; it’s what you’re paying for, and it’s what they’re good at! At this level, artist’s styles are very refined, so once a sketch is approved, buyers should be confident that they will get what they are looking for.
It’s an enlightening conversation well worth time for anyone on either side of the buying or selling of assignment illustration. Tune in here.
Oh, and thanks for the shout-out Jodie!
