The Lonka Project was established to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the death camps at the end of World War II. It is a voluntary photographic venture carried out by some 250 professional photographers, who will each create a unique environmental portrait of the last living Holocaust survivors. As part of his commitment to the Lonka Project as a Memory Keeper, Andy Anderson was asked to photograph American Lawyer Ben Ferencz, who was the chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials.
Intrigued by the power of the documentary, Andy Anderson is obsessed with capturing living history before it fades and is committed to making images that reflect the truth as he sees it. The experience of working with Mr Ferencz left him with a sense of hope. He only had an hour with him, but Andy told us, “Ben asked me to sit right down, and we immediately started an incredible conversation about life, the current state of politics, and his thoughts for the future of all of humanity. It was wonderful. Remember he is a 99-year-old, but he acted like a 30-year-old, so bright and full of life.”
