Mark has been in the illustration world for more than 30 years and has much to say about its past and future. On the blog portion of his site he plans a series of posts to tackle many of the issues that surround hiring illustrators: When to Use an Illustrator, Getting the Most from the Illustrator, and Building Relationships, to name a few. He also makes use of his blog as a platform to speak about the ways in which art and activism can align to create social change and enhance awareness of issues.  In one of his first posts, Mark shows us the mural he created to honor local emergency responders for the town of Oakland, Maryland. By employing a classic comic book style, he casts these brave volunteers as the heroes they are and in so doing, honors their service. Although volunteerism has decreased for many organizations, his hope is that his artwork will further a sense of urgency and compel people to get involved in whatever causes they are passionate about. The mural was designed to be viewed two ways: as an up-close abstraction and as a narrative  coveying the story of men and women helping one another.

Congratulations, Mark on your new site!  And thank you for taking on  the issues that we care about.  We’ll be checking in with you regularly in the months to come.
