Mark Stutzman Illustrates the Magic of David Blaine’s Upcoming Series

Posted on

Illustrator Mark Stutzman of Eloqui Studios’ ongoing collaboration with David Blaine began over 25 years ago. His most recent project with Blaine began over a year ago when asked to create posters for the series, and Stutzman considers this collaboration to be the most intensive and ambitious of their partnership. The two share a unique creative bond, with Stutzman drawing inspiration from Blaine’s magic style, which harkens back to the “Golden Age of Magic.” Their long-standing relationship includes over 15 event posters, merchandise, stunt sets, and signature playing cards. Stutzman’s work often features hidden images and illusions, a signature element that Blaine’s fans have come to expect.

David Blaine’s latest National Geographic documentary series, Do Not Attempt, defies his reputation as a fearless illusionist. Launching on March 23 for Disney+ and Hulu subscribers, the six-episode series takes Blaine around the world, exploring exotic places and meeting inspiring people. Filmed in locations such as Brazil, Southeast Asia, Japan, India, South Africa, and the Arctic Circle, the series blends travel, culture, and offbeat personalities, catering to mature audiences – and Stutzman’s work transports us there.

For Do Not Attempt, Stutzman’s artwork plays a central role in the series, with his posters appearing at the end of each episode. His illustrations are animated to recap scenes from the episodes during the credits. This project required creating six complex images in a short timeframe, which was a departure from the more measured pace of their usual collaborations. Stutzman is excited about how his artwork came to life through animation and expresses his gratitude for being a part of it. He believes the series will be a hit and, “hopes viewers will stay tuned for the credits”.
