Matt Rota’s Latest Project Explores the Soul of Mumbai, One Drawing at a Time

Posted on

Illustrator Matt Rota, known for his expressive line work and evocative editorial illustrations, has turned his attention to something a bit more timeless: the city of Mumbai. His latest project, Timeless Mumbai: A Visual Journey Through Mumbai’s Heritage, is a stunning, accordion-style art book that captures the architectural and cultural richness of one of India’s most storied cities.

Created in collaboration with author Khilen Shah, the book features over 100 original illustrations drawn on location and later rendered in vibrant color. Rota’s work brings Mumbai’s eclectic architecture to life—from Victorian Gothic and Art Deco to traditional vernacular structures. The images are paired with short, engaging texts that guide the reader through a thoughtful visual walking tour of the city.

What makes the book especially unique is its design: Timeless Mumbai unfolds as a continuous, concertina-bound panorama, housed in a beautifully illustrated slipcase. It’s part travel journal, part art piece, and ultimately, a deep love letter to the visual spirit of Mumbai.

See images of the book below, along with BTS videos of its creation.
