The flag project is an ongoing personal project for Zach Anderson. With elections fewer than two weeks away, these images serve as a reminder for all of us to exercise our right to vote.
The beautiful flag featured in these images by Zach Anderson belongs to photography consultant Bobbi Wendt. As Bobbi says, it is quite rare and has been tucked away in her studio until recently, waiting for the right moment to make an appearance. Read what Bobbi has to say about the history of this flag and what she and Zach hope to achieve with this series.
“The flag is beautiful in every way and quite rare. It was made in 1958 and was only distributed between January and August of 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii became states.
This flag was hand- and machine-stitched in the U.S. and displays 48 visible stars with 2 stars covered by 2 fabric swatches that could be removed to reveal a 49th or a 50th state flag, which is really kind of genius.
The fabric is a linen and cotton blend with a wonderful drape and texture. It is beautifully faded and slightly discolored. I was originally going to re-purpose it as a shower curtain, but I couldn’t bring myself to cut it, so it sat in my studio for years just waiting for the right project, and this is it. We’re using select photographs to partner with Workbook to encourage everyone to vote.”
