Tom Cocotos and the Fine Art of Collage

Posted on

Tom Cocotos began communicating visually before he could speak, and his primary method even then was collage, an art form that is both simple and sophisticated. Collage is like a visual record of all the creative decisions this artist makes along the way as he deconstructs and reconstructs his imagery. The tools are relatively simple: paper, magazines, pencil, and glue stick, but they nonetheless allow this artist to create  imagery that is sometimes a funny narrative, a probing portrait, or something powerfully iconic. Tom always seems to be working, whether it’s on the subway or in his studio here in New York. Commissioned work has also taken him all over the world, from Buenos Aires to Moscow, and this past year, he held artist residencies in Berlin, Buenos Aires, and Miami, with one-person exhibitions in all three cities. To read more about his art and commercial illustration, read the full interview at Design Arts Daily.
