In a recent interview with LogoLounge, designer Carlos Fernandez tells us how he got started, shares his problem-solving approach to design, and offers some great advice for anyone pursuing a career in the arts.
After 20-plus years in business, Carlos Fernandez’s most important design tool is still a pencil. He grew up sketching and doodling and thought he wanted to be a cartoon animator. But today, it’s his drawing skills he relies on most in his career as a successful logo designer. It’s not unusual for him to show a client, typically an agency creative, 60-80 pencil drawings in the initial design phase. Once he and his client have narrowed down the possibilities, he creates a tight drawing, and only then does he refine it with the use of the computer. “The final piece should embody some illustrative energy and work well at any size,” says Carlos.
