Throughout his 30-plus years as a professional illustrator, Mark Stutzman has consciously assessed each assignment in order to keep tabs on what worked well, what got him the assignment, what didn’t, and why. He’s begun sharing these insights in a series of six blog posts at his newly relaunched site.
The overarching theme of the first two posts is collaboration. Sometimes an at director turns to illustration because frankly, she’s exhausted every other option. But more often than not, a good art director knows how rewarding a creative collaboration can be and the satisfaction derived from producing something entirely unique. A seasoned art director also knows illustration, by nature, can be something open to interpretation which involves the viewer and draws them into a story. Not only that, it provides clients with a way to underscore their messages with unique style and interpretation.
