Inspired by IllustrationX’s Trend X post, each month we’re spotlighting a key trend in illustration. This month’s focus: Retro, an ever-expanding category as each decade rolls by. The category itself breaks into further subcategories from retro-futrism, to retro-nostalgia. From the love for the latest Superman movie to the retro re-brand of Baskin Robbins, one thing is for certain; the love for the old days is here to stay.
Retro has seemed to have made a resurgence as of late in direct correlation with the meteoric advances in technology. The haste at which current technology (AI, anyone?) has exploded has given rise to people gravitating towards the nostalgic. There is comfort and ease in the familiar, a key aspect of retro artwork that allows clients to shepherd in the new, wrapped in the aesthetic of the old. The affinity to retro is also one of resilience as the idea of being a non-conformist has always been trendy, and setting oneself apart is paramount to any marketer endeavor.
Ultimately, the uptick in Retro provides a welcome challenge to illustrators as the years that comprise this category start to grow. Now encompassing the 90’s and early 2000’s, there is an opportunity for marketers to find different ways to target demographics as they transition throughout the different life stages, possibly looking for escape or assistance. Whether it’s reminiscing about simpler times, or the visual affirmation of a beloved brand, retro illustrators create artwork that makes an impact in more ways that one.
